What to do if a Pothole Damages Your Tires

February 23rd, 2015 by

Potholes are annoying, until they become destructive, wreaking havoc on your tires. So, what to do if a pothole damages your tires? The service department here at Bosak Honda Highland knows, and we are going to share what you can do to correct the problem.

Step 1: Pull Over and Assess the DamageAuto Mechanic

If your car sounds funny after hitting a pothole, find a parking spot with enough space to examine your vehicle. Once you park, take a walk around the vehicle, listening for air coming out and checking for damage to the front bumper or fender. If you know that you instantly cut a tire after hitting a pothole, then flip on the emergency lights and pull over to the side of the road. Hopefully, there won’t be anything wrong with your vehicle, but if there is, then proceed to step two.

Step 2: Put on the Spare

Always make sure that there is a spare tire and jack on hand. You never know when you are going to need it. After you pull over, loosen the lug nuts and place the jack in the proper spot. It will be very difficult to get the car back up if it falls off the jack. If you have never changed a tire before, call a family member or friend for help.

Step 3: Call Bosak Honda and Review Your Insurance Policy

Our Bosak Honda team is always ready and will be happy to squeeze you in in an emergency. We also recommend that you have our service department perform an inspection of the vehicle. Our technicians know all of the signs of pothole damage, from bent rims and holes on the undercarriage to damage to your suspension, exhaust system, and steering. If you hit a pothole hard enough to garner a roadside inspection, you should let us take a closer look.

Additionally, you should check your insurance policy, especially if your Honda needs extensive repairs. The key area to review in your auto insurance is your Collision Coverage. Even if you aren’t covered and your vehicle has suffered severe damage,  then you may be able to get the city or state to pay by filing a tort claim. However, a tort claim should only be filed in extreme cases.
